SYED FAKARUDDIN
Syed Fakaruddin, born in 1989 in Malaysia, is a versatile artist renowned for his work in painting, sculpture, and installation. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from UiTM Malaysia and has earned notable accolades, including the Malaysia Emerging Artist Award 2019 and recognition as a finalist in the ‘Bakat Muda Sezaman’ contest organized by the National Visual Arts Gallery.
Syed’s art is characterized by a continuous exploration of materials and techniques, drawing inspiration from nature and his surroundings. His works often utilize metaphors to evoke emotions and challenge viewers’ perspectives. His recent projects, such as the solo exhibitions ‘ASAS’ in 2022 and ‘E-SCAPE’ in 2024, along with his residency at Rimbun Dahan, reflect his deep interest in the materiality of painting and its spatial properties.
In his latest solo exhibition, “E-SCAPE” in 2024, Syed delves into the materiality of painting through a series of wireframe artworks. Inspired by virtual maps and motivated by a period of health-related isolation, he reimagines landscapes from Google Maps using a custom-built device to create precise acrylic lines. His technique features a gradient wash for the background, standard acrylic lines for the middle ground, and vibrant neon for the foreground, creating a dynamic interplay of spatial layers. “E-SCAPE” reflects Syed’s fascination with spatiality and materiality, drawing from synthwave music’s graphical landscapes and his own filtered perceptions of virtual places, demonstrating how art can transcend physical limitations and inspire personal and perceptual exploration.

Syed Fakaruddin skillfully captures the essence of proportion through the depiction of tree trunks. The asymmetry of the roots and the variety presented by the stumps further enrich the narrative. The artwork reflects an individual’s deep reflections on external formations. It subtly implies that these formations find their strength in a central core, a foundational pillar supporting the entire structure. The portrayal of landscapes employs dynamic lines, vivid and full of energy, bringing to life the contours of each unique formation. Moreover, the artwork communicates the notion that the distinctive essence of each form finds expression in its own set of lines, setting it distinctly apart from the rest.
