The (former and) current Prime Minister once shared his vision on seeing Malaysia achieving Wawasan 2020; a vision marked by a year that is imminent upon us in less than two years. Will we, as a nation, become as what was envisioned? Will we stray away and plummet to the ground? Or will we opt for other ways where the path is wanted wear? In any of these, it is with certainty that as Malaysians we will do it filled with passion and pride for our beloved country.
The show will be exhibiting thirty artworks ranging from drawings, paintings to sculptures. Drop by our gallery to witness these refreshing artworks from the aspiring artists.

Artist Statement
Syahbandi Samat invites his audience into his personal space through his artwork titled ‘Ibu’. The piece bears multiple subjects which is symbolic to his relationship with his family member, particularly his dearest mother. The metaphors served as a clue to challenge the viewer to solve the puzzle through the subject combination which the artist has surrealistically composed. All in all, Syahbandi expresses his emotional and sentimental side of him reminiscing and exploring subjects of the past.

‘Birth’ and ‘Rebirth’ portray previous and current version (Malaysian Ringgit) fifty cent. The coins represent the face value of a country that has gone through a recent political revolution whereby the previous long-running government is no longer in power since being replaced by another coalition of political parties. The coin on the old coin dated 1973 refers to the birth of ‘Barisan Nasional’ which was led by the second Prime Minister, Tun Razak to do a coalition between parties of other races. This is due a national catastrophe which is known as ‘May 13 Incident’. Meanwhile the golden colored new coin dated 2018 to symbolize the fall of the government which the top position interestingly held by the son to Tun Razak, Dato’ Sri Najib. The blatant of ‘birth’ and ‘rebirth’ text on each of the respective coin can be seen as a metaphor to a celebration to those who are opposing the previous government. However, this can also be seen as a subtle diss to what type of monster could Malaysia be grooming next. Whatever it is, the power is in the people’s hand as long as they practice democracy in this country. After all, the significance of the artist using the coin is a spot on. From now and onwards, everything is a fifty-fifty.

‘Cerita Rakyat’ portrays a wedding ceremony at Kampung Sungai Limau, Perak. Closing up, the audience can see and be the eyewitness of the event but at a certain part of the painting I inserted a satirical imagery deemed meaningful to me. If you look closer, you can see that there are two boys holding a flower-patterned fan and a Keris-like object. Actually, the subject symblozes how crucial The Malays’ national identity as the originator of a place that once called as ‘Tanah Melayu’ in this day and age towards the country. As an overall experience, the audience can get a hint of nostalgic and old Malay wedding moment. Nevertheless, it is not in my intention to offend anyone. I believe that I am just a painter who wants to embed my patriotic feeling as a Malay boy who appreciates everyone as a Malaysian but cared nothing more than the truth.

The artwork portrays a meal which is served by a certain someone at a seemingly construction site of an imperial building / monument. Fresh fruits such as apples and bananas is chosen as subject is because of their organic value; expiration date. Just like the idea of promise(s). Something good could come out it just as much as the bad. Whether the promises will be realized and fulfilled is yet to be determined. If history has taught us anything, there are a lot of promises being made even before the independence.
