This artwork explores the connection between sleep, nature, and vitality. The soft fabric represents comfort and the act of sleeping as a necessary process of bodily repair. Meanwhile, the presence of flowers and plants represents the cyclical nature of decay and growth, paralleling the process of cellular regeneration within our bodies. Through this connection with nature, we are able to recharge our bodies, minds, and souls, renewing our sense of vitality and energy to continue moving forward.

Carrying My Universe to The World

The fascination with figurines in today’s world is undeniable. These toys have become incredibly popular, symbolizing the golden era of contemporary pop culture. In my artwork, I portray a man carrying a mysterious totem resembling a Retina (Eye), which represents Kaws’ iconic toy, Companion. As an artist, I perceive toys not merely as plastic products or children’s playthings, but as enduring artifacts of the future. They become symbols that will transcend time and be cherished for centuries to come, much like ancient relics from the past such as buried statues of pharaohs or sunken treasures of Atlantis. Plastic toys, in particular, hold a significant place in our modern civilization.

In this painting, a crowded building overwhelms the viewer with its countless windows and busy corridors. This structure evokes a feeling of oppression and entrapment, except for the strange architectural structure on the top floor. This unique building, unlike any other, represents hope and possibilities, inviting our imagination to explore new dimensions. The painting reflects the repressive and confining nature of urban life, where we build walls instead of bridges. However, this unusual building serves as a call to reconnect with urban life and inject vitality into our daily routines

This desolate painting evokes a sense of abandonment, with a dominating building lacking completion and infinite windows staring out at nothing. The top floors have become parking lots, while pillars ascend towards the sky, incomplete and giving way to the clouds. It evokes a sense of longing for what could have been, a melancholic atmosphere of unfulfilled dreams.

Present Continuous
Ping
80 x 80cm
Oil on Canvas
2023
Artist Statement
There is a huge problem with time, which is that there is never enough of it. These two works explore ways of translating time into a 2D-visual format – that is, into an actual, physical object. In doing so, it then becomes something that can be claimed and possessed, even if only in a symbolic gesture.
For me, the present is characterised as being messy and incomplete, and the future is abstract and unknowable. Present Continuous represents my interpretation of “now” by depicting my workspace as it appeared to me while I was producing the painting itself. Here, the painting has intentionally been left incomplete to reflect the present as being an ongoing, incomplete state.
Whereas, Future Imperfect tackles the concept of “future”. Alluding to how a green screen is commonly used as a placeholder in video production, the colour green is taken to symbolise unknown future possibilities. Resin, often associated with the idea of immortalising something in time, is used as a coating, acting as a physical, temporal barrier that separates the future from the now.
