The Difficult Crossing
“Because this storm isn’t something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is you. Something inside you. So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn’t get in, and walk through it, step by step.” – Haruki Murakami, ‘Kafka on the Shore’
‘The Difficult Crossing’ presents a symbolic narrative, where the series chronicles the artist’s turbulent journey through the 7 stages of grief from the recent loss of her mother; and how one perseveres through the overwhelming emotions towards self-healing.
In this painting, ‘As Time Stood Still’ depicts a female figure in a paralysed and debilitating state of shock; and as it is without limbs, she helplessly looks on at the fallen sarong batik halus, a fine fabric sheath that has been passed down for 2 generations and was often worn by the artist’s symbolized maternal figure.

‘Between Realities’ reveals the devastating aftermath of the inconsolable denialism caused by the grounded lifeboat in its futile attempt at escaping the real world and the reality of losing a loved one.

‘Collections’ is a series of framed portraits of intimate spaces, displaying the private world of collections as the extended self. It is this unconventional form of portraiture where the sitter is absent; and these artefacts of one’s passion comes into the spotlight as being intrinsic to their identity.
