Shafiq Nordin
Shafiq Nordin (b. 1989, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia) is a pop-surrealist artist celebrated for his dynamic, satirical depictions of global and personal issues. Early in his career, Shafiq gained recognition for his bold critiques of societal injustices through chimeric, muscle-bound beasts that symbolize imperialist ambitions and oppressive systems. Drawing inspiration from Yayoi Kusama and Takashi Murakami, his work features bold outlines, vivid imagery, and repetitive patterns akin to woodcut prints, establishing his connection to political art traditions.
Over time, Shafiq’s style evolved into vibrant pop surrealism, seamlessly blending elements of childhood nostalgia, humour, and contemporary culture. His recent works reinterpret pop culture icons, reflecting his personal journey, particularly his post-marriage life and the interplay between politics and family. Balancing sarcasm with visual intricacy, his art engages viewers with themes of identity and societal critique, affirming his position as one of Malaysia’s most innovative contemporary artists.
A graduate from UiTM, Shafiq gained international recognition with solo exhibitions like Imperium (2016) and It’s A Beautiful Life (2022). His work has been featured in global art fairs such as Art Kaohsiung and Art Taipei.

Artist Statement
“A Taste of Memories” by Shafiq Nordin is a vibrant, pop-inspired cut-out installation that reflects the artist’s teenage memories of buying ice cream from a Chinese vendor. He fondly recalls collecting Pokémon Go stickers with each purchase, eventually earning a free ice cream after collecting ten. These stickers, featuring heroic characters, influenced his artistic direction, inspiring bold, larger-than-life figures. The artwork is filled with fun and vivid colors, showcasing Shafiq’s playful style and pop culture influences. It captures the joy of childhood memories while highlighting how they shaped his creativity and personal identity.
