FAWWAZ SUKRI

Born 1987, Selangor, Malaysia.

FAWWAZ SUKRI (b. 1987, Selangor) interest in comics prevails into art as this pop methodology deeply inspires him to visualize it in into his works. Most of his subjects come from comic love stories from the 1960 such as “Heartthrobs”, having him examine the use of the literary genre tragicomedy that blends aspect of tragic affairs in comical forms. The element of collages represented in his work depicts chain of events pertinent to the main event occurring in the “big picture” and the connection between collages and the main subject is highlighted as the key to delivering a dramatic touch to the art.

Artist Statement

This series of paintings is about the current situation that I was dealing with during the Covid-19. I am using cartoon characters such as Shin Chan, Elmo, Groover, Doraemon and Nobita to reimagine what it looks like if these characters face the same occurrences as I do. I reimagined certain situations happen to these characters such as roadblock checkpoints, invisible enemies, and being restrained from returning to hometown. Apart from cartoon characters as the message of my self-reflection, I also used materials that represent this sense of confinement such as the plywood as the barrier and the signboard.
