In Sync
Artist Couples

G13 Gallery is proud to present `In Sync: Artist Couples’, a group exhibition that features six pairs of artist couples. The artists name are as follows; Amy Nazira and Hidayat Arshad, Anisa Abdullah and Khairul Izham, Gan Chin lee and Liu Hsin-Ying, Kow Leong Kiang and Chong Ai Lei, Najib Ahmad Bamadhaj and Cinta Ayuandrea, and Yuki Tham and Nur Iman. The artist couples have been independently showcasing their artwork and `In Sync: Artist Couples’ would be their first exhibition that focuses on their artworks as spouses rather than as an individual.
`In Sync: Artist Couples’ just as the title suggest would be the reunification of both artist spouses to be working together, participating in the art exhibition. Amidst from the differences and perspectives than one bear from the other as far as the visual and art practices and journey goes, `In Sync: Artist Couples’ would dig deeper into the relationship between the two. Opposite do attract and somehow the tides can clash among themselves, `In Sync: Artist Couples’ exhibition will challenge these artist couples to come up with responsibility of churning out what their relationship meant to them as practicing artists. There will be approximately 12 artworks in various techniques and styles.
`In Sync: Artist Couples’ will run from 24th August until 7th September 2019 at G13 Gallery. Gallery opens daily from 11am to 5pm, closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.

Artist Statement
Khairul and I have always wanted to collaborate in artwork for a long time ago when we started doing artworks even before we got married. We had always wanted to try to create an artwork with both our techniques which is collage and line drawing. It has also been our passion since both of us admire and respect each other’s artworks although our artwork is different from each other and we like to change ideas, opinions and discuss together. Although, it isn’t easy we finally did two pieces. These artworks are about the colours of our daily life, beloved family. It’s a little piece of our hearts, I love pop art and pop colours, our daughter loves horses, pony, unicorns, and my husband loves plants and gardening so much. It’s a mixture of everything that we go through ups and downs but we never give up.

Artist Statement
Marriage, a contractual relationship that accommodates two life systems. Marriage induces two distinct individuals to clash against each other and stick together some time or another, perpetuating a constant process of union and separation. This painting stems from my wife’s vision as an artist of abstract painting. Putting myself in her shoes, I feel around for textures unique to her style and identify with her feeling and perception. I hope the combination of each other’s creative power paves the way for the work of art representative of our connubial status.

Artist Statement
“I want to enter you.”
“I hope I can understand in the most difficult circumstances.”
“Seem to be unable to break through my contours.”
We keep telling craving that our words can be hung on. We also give our all to see each other in the right light. Brought together by love, we sprawled across and lay on top of each other, closing up on a vision capable of more precious and truthful findings. This is also the case with our project. In Couple, we adopt, make sense of and give a new shape to each other’s stylistic vocabulary, and in so doing we navigate our way into another landscape.
