20 July - 3 August 2019
G13 Project Room was established in 2016. G13 Project Room was initially created by G13 gallery as a platform to highlight new faces to the industry. G13 Project Room also promotes the new innovative direction of those who wish to diversify their arts by venturing into new methods and materials. G13 gallery is proud to present ERYN, a local contemporary artist based in Penang.
‘Mirror, Mirror’ remarks ERYN’s first solo exhibition, showcasing a series of artworks that speak about the psychological aspects of being a woman nowadays. Through her own experience and readings pertain to gender and the body in contemporary Southeast Asia, ‘Mirror, Mirror’ is a reflection upon a woman’s sense of self and how this can be influenced by the expectations and obligations imposed on women in our society. Mirrors are linked to the realm of the feminine and the words ‘Mirror, Mirror’ directly refers to the opening line of the Evil Queen’s spell in the popular fairy tale Snow White when she asks her magic mirror ‘who’s the fairest of them all?’ The association of female vanity as a vice and the notion that a woman’s worth is measured by her physical. Beauty is like a double-edged blade. In contemporary society, ideals of beauty and stereotyped gender roles for women and men are also constantly reinforced by mass media.
‘Mirror, Mirror’ runs from 20 July until 3 August 2019 at G13 Gallery. Gallery opens daily from 11am to 5pm, closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.
