Visual Poetry
Solo Exhibition by Faizal Suhif
16 - 30 December 2017
G13 gallery proudly presents Faizal Suhif Solo Exhibition entitled “Visual Poetry”. This solo exhibition denotes Faizal Suhif’s seventh solo exhibition and his third one with G13 gallery. G13 gallery will be exhibiting more than fifteen pieces of printmaking artwork from the artist.
This time around, the artist will be highlighting the relationship of man and nature to a ‘narrower scope’ than he ever did before. Nature, which draws the closest inspiration to Faizal’s body of work, will be dug deeper as the final form of his new series will feature large and blown out scale subject matter. The latest solo presentation uncovers yet again Faizal’s skillful display of alternative printmaking artistry.

Lebah
Faizal Suhif
244x172.5cm
Stencil, Oil & Charcoal on Canvas
2017
Artist Statement
Artwork titled ‘Lebah’ and ‘Labah’ depicts an over-scale charcoal drawing of a bee and a spider respectively. Both are visualized in a blown out manner is essentially to highlight them as subject matters both literally and figuratively. Both creatures can be found within the artist’s vicinity which thus becomes an inspiration for him to choose them as a suitable subject matter in the first place. Metaphorically speaking, the bee represent positive and the spider is considered negative as of to its function to the artist. Bee is known to be an insect which pollinate plants to help them to reproduce plant seed as well as produce honey, a well-known cure to certain ailments. Meanwhile, the spider to the artist is seemed nothing significantly beneficial since they spit out cobwebs all over his space. Be that as it may, the artist believes that it is just ‘au naturel’ as it can be. The artist thinks every living creature has its own reason and purpose to its existence. The only challenge is to co-exist among each other. Lebah and Labah pieces generally represent balance in nature itself.

Pasak Bumi
Faizal Suhif
122x31cm (7 panel)
Stencil & Oil on Canvas
2017
Artist Statement
Scientifically labeled as Eurycoma longifolia, it is a common plant that can be found within Malaysian and Indonesian forest. The plant which commonly known as ‘tongkat ali’ among the local is prescribed by the traditional medicine practitioner to enhance male sexual prowess. However, the term ‘pasak’ on its own refers to a piece of wood which is slotted to strengthen the joint of two structures. Based on this description which is borrowed from Malay heritage architecture, the idea of ‘pasak’ is used to portray the importance of upholding and safeguarding nature in order to prolong the longevity our ecosystem. The combination of the term ‘pasak’ and ‘bumi’ or translated as earth is a form of a respond by the artist in regards to the environmental awareness which he observed both socially and philosophically.
