Mungkin Nanti by David Lee
7 - 24 APRIL 2021
Mungkin Nanti, a solo exhibition by a local contemporary artist, David Lee. This exhibition presents five new artworks from David that consist of his own personal story; the question of identity and reminiscing memories, represent by disarrayed and chaotic juxtaposition of subjects. As suggested in the title, Mungkin Nanti which means ‘one day’, this series conveys his desire to be free from his tribulations, from his guilt and troubles, and his hope in becoming a great artist.
There are five artworks in this series, and all paintings are in order. As the sequence progresses, the paintings become more and more disordered, and more subjects or ‘characters’ are added into the paintings. Every subject in these paintings symbolizes David’s state of mind, thus at the very end of this sequence, David shows us all the characters; the manifestations of his own psyche and self-consciousness – his truest self.
Mungkin Nanti runs from 7th – 24th April 2021 at G13 Gallery

Chupa-Chups in painting (4), O Chupa Ku are my favourite candy when I was growing up. My mum would buy it for me as a treat to cheer me up whenever I used to get punished by my dad. The yellow Adidas sneaker in O Chupa Ku was the exact pair I used to have as a kid.

Satu Hari, a self-portrait of me in the bathroom, where most of my thoughts, tribulations, ideas, and random thoughts come from. Fun fact, it is where I got my inspiration from for this series. Satu Hari illustrates the teddy bears I used to have when growing up. They always made me feel safe when I got scared or got in trouble. I painted myself as a woman [represented by the underwear and the high heels] because I have many feminine sides.
