From Lines to Gaps
A Solo Exhibition by Alicia Lau
29 Aug - 12 Sept 2020
G13 Gallery is proud to present ‘ALICIA LAU: FROM LINES TO GAPS’, a solo exhibition by a local artist Alicia Lau that explores mark-making in relation to the artist’s current experience and observation. In retrospect, Alicia’s art-making is always phenomenological in the sense that she works correspondingly to the material’s properties. This approach in her art-making is further explored in this solo exhibition contemplating her current situation back at home.
Living in a hillside area, a major concern by the artist and most people in the area is the problem of landslides and how it can create an uncertain state of one’s life. The recent crack lines in her home’s flooring prompted further the anxiety that things are easily breakable, be it as strong as a building to the fragile human bones.
Coupled with the obstacle created by the recent pandemic, these have forced her to take care of herself and also to be extra conscious of her surroundings. Alicia interpreted this experience by bringing a sense of control in her works such as fixing, constructing, or combining acts that have therapeutically overcome the discomfort she experiences.
‘ALICIA LAU: FROM LINES TO GAPS’ will runs from 29 August until 12 September 2020 at G13 Gallery. The gallery opens daily from 11 am to 5 pm, closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.

Artist Statement
Understanding,
Is the essence of distance.
The gap that is making us safe,
Yet, the gap is hard to be silenced,
For we may share the echo of ignorance.
Be it miles or inches,
Mind the gap,
And then,
Mind,
The Gap.
