140 x 120cm
Oil on Horizontally-cut Canvas Mounted on Canvas
2025
This artwork reimagines a familiar moment of togetherness, a traditional gathering around food through deliberate, rhythmic horizontal cuts made across a painted canvas. At the center, a bowl of ais batu campur (ABC) stands as a symbol of culture, memory and shared experience. The resulting lines introduce a new visual rhythm that reflects both contemporary aesthetics and the layered nature of collective memory. These cuts do not destroy the image but instead reshape it, offering a fresh perspective on how continuity can emerge through transformation. The act of layering and restructuring invites reflection on how tradition and modernity can coexist within a harmonious visual language.

Dua Musim
Nik Mohd Shahfiz
106 x 122cm
Acrylics, Oil Paint & Horizontally Shredded Canvas on Canvas
2024
In 'Dua Musim', Nik Mohd Shahfiz reinterprets the bunga raya, Malaysia's national flower, as a powerful symbol of cultural pride and evolving identity. His artworks move beyond traditional representations, presenting the flower as fragmented yet resilient.
Each floral image is carefully painted, then cut into strips and reconstructed in a glitch-like arrangement. This method reflects the tension between tradition and modernity, as well as the ongoing transformation of national identity. The horizontal cuts suggest the fragile yet lasting nature of cultural memory.
Through bold colour, texture, and composition, Shahfiz creates a visual dialogue between unity and disruption. The vibrant, broken forms speak to the layered reality of patriotism and the beauty that emerges through imperfection.

Toys have become a global phenomenon, captivating not only children but also collectors worldwide. The industry, particularly in plastic and vinyl toys, has witnessed a surge in demand, indicating its appeal across different age groups.
The culture of toy collecting has experienced rapid growth over time, and this phenomenon holds significant historical value. In Nik Mohd Shahfiz’s recent works, he portrays iconic Disney character toys such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, as well as the renowned designer toy KAWS, who represents a prominent pop culture icon. Through these artworks, he aims to present a glimpse into the future, envisioning these toys as potential relics.
While civilizations of the past cherished artifacts like the Venus of Willendorf or the Bust of Cleopatra, as a contemporary artist, he finds toys to hold a profound significance. He collects these toys and observes their manufacturing process, witnessing how they transform or deform under the impact of extreme weather conditions. This metamorphosis leads to the creation of intriguing forms. The fluidity and interaction between the toys and their surroundings demonstrate how these “relics” blend harmoniously with the environment, envisioning a scenario where they may one day be buried in sand or submerged beneath the sea.
