Black on Black: Blossom Unbound

Black on Black: Blossom Unbound

Khairudin Zainudin
183 x 217cm
Acrylic & Oil on Canvas
2025
This artwork invites viewers to reconsider the evolving identity of Muslim women in hijab, challenging preconceived notions and societal expectations. The textured black fabric entwined with delicate floral motifs symbolizes the tension between tradition and transformation, restriction and self-expression. The lock and key serve as metaphors, raising questions about whether they represent protection, imposed boundaries, or the power to unlock new narratives.
Through the contrast between realism and abstraction, this piece questions how individuality coexists within cultural frameworks. It asks whether the hijab is a mark of empowerment or constraint and who defines its meaning, the wearer or society. As perceptions shift, this artwork urges reflection on the complexities of faith, identity and the ever-changing role of the modern Muslim woman.

2025
In “100 Years of Good Health is Everyone’s Dream”, Khairudin Zainudin places Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad at the heart of his artwork, not just as a prominent political figure, but as a symbol of discipline, longevity and mindful living.
Thematically aligned with Celebrating Diversity, this piece draws inspiration from Tun’s iconic phrase, “Sedap biar berhenti” (Even if it tastes good, know when to stop), which speaks to self-control and conscious eating - values that cut across cultures and traditions.
For the artist, this piece also acts as a personal reminder to always prioritize his health.

The phenomenon of people wanting to appear 'extremely Malay' refers to efforts to emphasize Malay identity through clothing, language, or religious practices. This is often seen as a way to preserve cultural and religious heritage, as well as Malay rights in a sociopolitical context. However, it can sometimes take on a satirical tone, highlighting the tendency to hold onto a narrow definition of Malay identity, which is actually more dynamic and diverse. The exaggerated size of the songkok can also be seen as a satirical commentary on those who promote 'Malayness' excessively for political gain.

The Turban's Tale

The Turban's Tale

Khairudin Zainudin
122 x 122cm
Acrylic & Oil on Canvas
2024
This work reflects the artist’s early years in a pondok, a traditional Islamic learning center, where wearing a turban was part of daily life. As a child, he wore an adult-sized turban that often slipped over one eye, a quiet image of innocence wrapped in tradition.
The turban, like a school uniform, symbolized discipline, knowledge and spiritual intention. It was a way to follow the Prophet Muhammad’s example and to earn spiritual reward, not a political act.
As time passed, the artist saw how this symbol of faith became misread. What was once a marker of devotion is now often misunderstood and unfairly linked to extremism.
Through layered imagery and botanical forms, the piece recalls a time when identity was shaped by sincerity, not fear. It invites viewers to reconsider how cultural and religious symbols are perceived, and to see the person before the prejudice.

Artist Statement

The painting delves into Kelantan’s cultural practices, illustrating how certain habits transcend ethnic boundaries and become part of the collective identity. The inclusion of the boko meludah (spitting jar) and worn-out shoes symbolizes traditional customs and resilience, reflecting behaviors observed across various communities, including the Kelantanese Chinese.

In Kelantan, the Chinese community has historically assimilated aspects of Malay culture, leading to shared practices and mutual influences. This cultural integration is evident in daily routines and social behaviors, where traditions from different ethnic groups converge.

Abdullah Munsyi’s Kisah Pelayaran Abdullah provides critical insights into the societal norms of his time, highlighting issues such as idleness and neglect of cleanliness. These observations are not confined to a single community but resonate across various groups, reflecting universal challenges in societal development.

By depicting these shared cultural practices, the artwork invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of cultural assimilation and the collective behaviors that define a civilization. It underscores the interconnectedness of communities and the shared heritage that shapes societal norms.

Doa (Wishing)

Acrylic on Canvas & Wood Frame
2025
At the break of dawn, while the sea still rests beneath a blanket of mist, a man lifts his hands in silent prayer. He places his fate in the hands of the heavens as he faces the vast, unpredictable ocean in search of sustenance.
On the shore, his wife waits with quiet strength. She does not wait merely out of longing, but with steadfast hope. Her eyes remain fixed on the horizon as she offers her own silent prayers, wishing for her husband’s safe return.
These paired works portray the quiet endurance of a fisherman and his wife. Their lives are bound by the sea, by devotion, and by the willingness to surrender to the unknown. One endures the waves; the other carries the weight of faith.
The artist’s careful rendering captures both the quiet beauty of devotion and the strength that underpins it. The classically painted floral frames enhance this symbolism. One frame, vibrant and harmonious, represents the ideal life the husband strives to provide. The other, more chaotic and textured, reflects the harsh realities and unseen struggles that make such dreams possible. Together, they create an emotional contrast between serenity and survival, between stability and sacrifice.
