Inventory 2026: Nik M Shazmie
Expanding from his award-winning Rumah Kita (Our Home) series, Nik M Shazmie transforms the durian into a powerful symbol of identity, resilience and belonging. Inspired by the fruit’s rugged exterior and the solidity of Brutalist architecture, he reimagines durian shells through painting and sculpture, celebrating their raw textures and imperfections. The series reflects on Malaysia as a shared home where diversity, coexistence and the beauty of imperfection come together to shape a collective sense of place.

Strata” speaks to layers, levels and accumulated time, framing RUMAH KITA as a shared home built gradually rather than in a single moment — shaped by histories, races, beliefs, policies, and continuous negotiation. Like apartments, terraces, informal settlements, and even geological layers of land, these elements exist stacked upon one another: not always orderly, yet fundamentally interdependent. The phrase “Jajar Bertindih” (lined and overlapping) further suggests a condition of enforced closeness, where communities do not merely coexist but overlap, press against one another, and negotiate space under constant pressure. This tension is reflected in the work’s dense, compressed form — heavy, tight, and almost burdened, presenting RUMAH KITA not as an idealized vision of home, but as a lived structure shaped by endurance, compromise, and resilience.

“Teras Bertingkat” (tiered terraces) points to graduated space- levels built to support, elevate and organize life. Within RUMAH KITA, the work reflects how a shared home is structured through layers of hierarchy: social, economic, architectural, and cultural. The stacked, stepped forms resemble terraces, platforms, and foundations, suggesting progress achieved through accumulation rather than sudden ascent.
