FURiends: Portrayals of Cats and Dogs
G13 Gallery is proud to present ‘FURiends: Portrayals of Cats & Dogs’, an exhibition that focuses on the portrayals of pets adopted by our local artists. Locally, cats and dogs are the most commonly adopted domestically and culturally. This includes artists. It seems that their friendliness and adorability are able to bring comfort to the artists and help them manage their emotional level when going through tough times. Perhaps keeping pets could be some kind of peer pressure, as nowadays we can see many artists post their stories with and about their animal buddies on social media. Whatever the reason is, it is no doubt that pets partly play an essential role in the lives of the artists who own them.
Throughout history, the art world has been seen as having a number of artists who have adopted different animals as their pets. Perhaps these animals have not just been seen as pets but presumably as the artists’ buddies that their presence contributes to not only significant comfort and affection but also ideas to the artists.
As these two animals are the main focus of this exhibition, FURiends displays a number of artworks that portray the artists’ pets―the cats and dogs of their homes. The portrayals of the pets in some way embody the artists’ appreciation of these animals. After all, the animals have been present all along in the artists’ ups and downs in life. This exhibition also serves as a gesture of commemoration to show to others that part of the artists’ creative process in relation to their camaraderie with these animals.
‘FURiends: Portrayals of Cats & Dogs’, runs from 12th until 31st December 2020 at G13 Gallery.
