Chin Wan Kee, ‘Sculpturing is Meditative’

G13 Gallery proudly presents ‘Sculpturing is Meditative’, by Malaysian sculptor named Chin Wan Kee.

“I have been exploring more about the people around me since I began to draw and paint. The basis for my sculptural project is to study human behavior. I wanted to know more about the way people thinks, their values, their beliefs and why they do what they do”- Chin Wan Kee

Wan Kee’s approach to art-making was quite philosophical and he also has a keen interest in eastern thoughts and humanist philosophy. Hence, the basis for his sculptural project is to study human behavior and to find the answer to all of his ‘how?’ and ‘why?’ The journey to search the answer for all the rhetorical question in his head, Wan Kee have been quite an observant and have been exploring about the people around him. He then presented his view in various situations or expressed them in metaphors which then bring out an unvarnished insight into the human condition. Through his sculptural work, he has become more aware of the problems within man’s nature. He also comes to a realization of his role in these societies and the responsibilities he has for his life.

“Sculpturing is meditative. It seizes me and gets me in a position to experience the truth and freedom of life. Sculpturing is also a spirit booster, to continue to arouse and plunge myself into the roots of my own identity.”- Chin Wan Kee

Wan Kee engaged in bronze sculpting and his sculptural forms show the influence of the pre-war to post-war European sculptors with a touch of the orient. Wan Kee’s sculptures can be described as elegant, crude, modern and sometimes primitive looking. They can also be heavy set or emaciated. A number of his figures show gaping wounds, some even without limbs while the others with lumpy-scaly skin. The sculptures were made using the lost wax techniques and ceramic shell techniques, and with a darkened patina that doesn’t allow trapped or bounced light. His sculptures have a ragged surface, they can look raw, and with a smoother surface, little warts show up.
