Victress Niche
1 - 16 March 2019
In conjunction with ‘International Women’s Day 2019’, G13 Gallery proudly presents ‘Victress Niche’, by 9 Malaysian female artists named Alexandra Hon, Alicia Lau, Amy Nazira, Eryn, Liew Mei Toong, Raimi Sani, Trixie Tan, Yim Yen Sum, and Yuki Tham.
‘ Victress Niche’ is focusing on how different individuals, particularly 9 women artists contemplating juncture of their life and translating them into varieties of approach in their art making. It is interesting to see how being a woman in a certain community, especially an artist, could also nurture one selves to having a voice in expressing their personal experience to the society. This exhibition stresses on reexamining justification of the stylistic dogma which sometimes applies to women artists, which they are believed to confine to only certain feminine styles or qualities. In addition, this exhibition is also about redefining the evaluation of aesthetic tendency that is actually more individualistic rather than gender-inclined.
‘ Victress Niche’ runs from 1st until 16th March 2019 at G13 Gallery. Gallery opens daily from 11am to 5pm, closed on Sundays and Public Holidays. To find out more about the exhibition, please log on to www.g13gallery.com or www.facebook.com/G13gallery. You may also reach us at 03 – 7880 0991, or email info@g13gallery.com for more.

A gift is often masked by a gift wrapper, making the gift a mystery. The enigma of a gift is synonymous to the nature of life.
A broken, torn packaging may have seemed like an imperfect gift, however this could be a close illustration of life.
I think life is a long journey traveled through events that are ephemeral; with many pits stops at moments that are tough to let go.
Looking through the torn holes is like peeking through past memories, reminiscing on my past attachments. The longings, the constant reluctance, and the many hesitations. My paintings are built upon containment of my feelings.
I think we all have different sides, and we project differently to different people. Therefore, I composed my paintings in such a way where It reveals only portions of my expressions. They are secrets that host battles in my head between to convey or to withdraw.

The Birdcage series examines the power imbalances and threats faced by women in patriarchal societies in Asia. Each birdcage is based on a mass-produced home, such as terrace houses and bungalows, turned into a gilded cage for its masked occupants. The perceived sense of security is a sham, as snake- like creatures and other monsters easily bypass the bars to threaten the caged inhabitants.
The pieces for this exhibition include cutouts on canvas and are part of the artist’s exploration in using cutouts to bring another dimension to a flat piece of work. This time, small sections are carefully cut out from a piece of stretched canvas, creating an intricate surface that allows for cast shadows. At the same time, the cutout cages and strings help to hold the main elements in place, creating an instance similar to an insect caught in a spider’s web. Certain characters, which are an intrusion to the birdcage homes, are cut from a separate piece of canvas and interlaced into the cutout canvas piece.
