THE JOYS OF LIVING: THE ARTISTRY OF CALVIN CHUA

G13 Gallery is proud to present The Joys Of Living: The Artistry Of Calvin Chua. This exhibition features works in various medium such as ink, oil and water colour on canvas and paper. It will be open for public viewing from the 5th to 19th Nov 2016.
Calvin Chua Cheng Koon (b.1961) is among the country’s leading exponent of watercolour painting today. A former graduate of the Kuala Lumpur College of Art and trained under senior artists Cheah Yew Saik (b.1939) the late Ng Gaik Hong and Lai Loong Soong (b.1944), Calvin is acknowledged for his innovative and versatile approach to traditional mediums and appreciated for his meaningful choice of subject matters. This exhibition will attempt a survey of the veteran painter’s artistic developments by featuring selected works focusing on styles and subject matters gleaned from different periods beginning in the 1990s to the present.
As the current President of the Malaysian Watercolour Society (MWS) Calvin is also an active participant in many local and international art events. A regular feature at the Malaysian Art Expo since its inception in 2007, Calvin has to date exhibited in Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, France, Jordan, the United States just to name a few. He was also a winner of the Young Contemporary Award (1986) and the Yayasan Seni Selangor Award (2009) among others. Calvin garnered considerable attention as a contemporary adept of the water colour medium when his paintings at the 2015 Maritime Silk Road Coastal Shantou-International Watercolour Painting event in Shantou, China which was participated by many esteemed painters from America, Europe, Asia, etc, was awarded the 2nd Prize by a panel of international jurors.
This minor survey exhibition organized by G13 Gallery of Calvin’s 4 decades involvement in art is both an eye opening introduction to a new generation of art lovers while paying tribute to the artist’s loyal collectors and admirers.
