In this artwork, I am trying to make a comparison between a family of politicians and a family from a normal class. Both have a different background but at the same time, share the same content which is about the politics in familyhood.

The painting portrays a scene of an environment in a forest with a bunch of fruits and a pile junk of classic cars. If we look closely, the subjects are composed oddly as we have fruits that seemed to unlikely grow up from their respective trees; some bananas are grown from citrus branches and so on. This unusual scenery symbolizes our current political climate; the cars connote the old system and fruits are hanged purposely to indicate cumbersome acceptance. As a nation, we can still hope for the best and it is by being united that we could shape the country to become a better one. However, not everyone can accept changes hence persistently taking their ways of looking at the matter, which will somehow obstruct us to progress.

This series of artwork is inspired by my own experience of trying to own a house where it somewhat got me thinking about this obsession we have with owning our dream home. Just like any other major milestone in life, getting and owning a house is a challenge to Malaysian youths nowadays. Wanting and being able to afford your own space are two very different things.

Malaysia as a developing country remains consistent about providing access to homeownership and several incentives are given to the young starters. However, “Your Own Home” sales pitches are not the only positive side we were looking at. Or “To Own Your Dream Lifestyle with a Booking fee of Only RM1000”, followed by the ease of paying off affordable monthly loans.

We get persuaded with dreams of the luxury living that others try to sell us: high-end security features, a fountain in front of your condominium, a herbs garden and infinity pools. For me, they are all not more than illusions, that might not mean anything if you can’t enjoy them as much as you can because you’re so caught up in the everyday job routine. Also, young people are at the greatest risk when it comes to the rising price of houses, with interest rates and monthly bills unrealistically higher than their monthly income.

In this artwork, I tried to combine the imaginal line and patterns of buildings, giving my interpretation of the relationship between illusion and reality. Besides that, this series of artwork also connote the dilemma of renting versus buying.
