Artist Statement
Inspired by the theme of ‘Filling the Void’, Amy Nazira chooses to highlight the definition of interaction between man and space. The artist feels that certain space is designed and decorated by the owner according to his/her feeling and emotion. This is done for the purpose of creating a desired mood and vibe for the place. Besides that, ‘space’ to the artist does not limit to intimate spaces such as bedrooms or the living. However, space also exists in the soul of man and nature. As an example, her artworks portray a figure in various parts of the house and every space tends to have each vibe to it. Those spaces are neatly arranged and decorated according to taste and functionality. Indirectly, communication exists spiritually between man and their space since the life that goes through that vicinity.

To some drifters, foreign town is just another platform or changing station. It is another starting point for them to wander until they find a place to settle in. If not, the journey will never end.

Back to the works, there are three historical British colonial building: city theatre (Panggung Bandaraya), Supreme Court and Masjib Jamek. Those are important architect landmarks that symbolize our nation from the beginning. The starting concept for the nation is always very perfect, smooth and pure, but when the time go on, there are getting more and more holes. The white not only show the structure of the building, but also in form of spirit where covered by digging holes, which depict the metaphor for the current political issues; or perhaps alternative, surreal, fantastic and imagined urban configurations in our future?

“For while the object is a resistant material body, it is also, simultaneously, a mental realm over which I hold sway, a thing whose meaning is governed by myself alone. It is all my own, the object of my passion.” – Jean Baudrillard, The System of Collecting.

‘Collections’ is a series of framed portraits of intimate spaces, displaying the private world of collections as the extended self. It is this unconventional form of portraiture where the sitter is absent; and these artefacts of one’s passion comes into the spotlight as being intrinsic to their identity.
