A CELEBRATION OF HISTORY AND THE PROMINENT FIGURES OF TAIPING

G13 Gallery is pleased to announce that it will be showcasing the latest works by emerging young artist Liu Cheng Hua this December. Entitled ‘La (Root)’ or Larut which means ‘the base’, is the old colonial name given to Taiping, Perak. This new series of works by the award winning artist which features mini-installations, 2D and 3D works of various dimensions further explores and highlights the contributions made by Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee as well as Ngah Ibrahim and prominent figures from the Indian community of Taiping since the 1860s.
Liu Cheng Hua, a graduate from the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) was personally mentored by the country’s top installation artist, Zulkifli Yusof since 2008 and first made headlines in the local art scene with his installation pieces that explored the background of one of Taiping’s most illustrious figure, Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee. Noted for his large scale installations and innovative use of materials, Liu Cheng Hua has won numerous competitions held at the national level and was the first Malaysian to be invited to participate in the 4th East Java (JATIM) Biennale in Surabaya, Indonesia in 2011.Liu Cheng Hua was both the finalist for the Malaysian Emerging Artist (MEA) Award (2009) and the Young Contemporaries Award by the National Visual Art Gallery (2010).
